Much has been said about the Mumuye man. How he has faired from the ancient world to the present.
Through the precolonial times of slave raids and intertribal warfare.
The British colonial times in Northern Nigeria and its inherent oppressive Indirect Rule.
Coming into Independent Nigeria's chequered contemporary political dispensation, and to date.
As humans in the near society, what ideals were these people known for?
A Mumuye was known generally as a hardy, morally and physically upright human.
He lived off the land, laboured and toiled to meet his personal and family needs. He produced crops and livestock as mainstay of his economy.
The Mumuye were hardly traders of the itenerent nature that we see in many a tribes around. Trading entailed some degree of dishonesty which really went contrary to Mumuye virtue to never tell lies or cheat. This conduct was considered attributes of lazy persons. Laziness was never tolerated and everyone avoided being labelled as such.
Nowadays however many have joined trading and entrepreneurship, which is a reality of coping with changing economic systems and times.
All in all, the underlying morals of truth, hardwork and strength of character remain the desirable traits in the people.
